A new Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme was launched recently. This new programme will demonstrate profitable dairy calf to beef systems on a whole farm basis through a network of ten demonstration farms. The primary aim is to demonstrate that, where a high level of technical efficiency is achieved on beef farms, it is possible to attain a net margin per hectare (excluding premia) in excess of €500 per hectare.

Drummonds / Teagasc Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme programme is supported by Drummonds, Volac, MSD Animal Health, Liffey Mills, Grassland Agro and the Irish Independent. The programme will follow the development of the ten farmers across eight counties over the next three years, as they attempt to harness the full potential of increased numbers of calves for beefing from the post quota dairy herd. Gordon Peppard, Teagasc has been appointed as dedicated programme adviser working closely with the ten participating farmers. Locally Drummonds are proud to have the support of three farmers within our catchment. Ben Sweeney, Enfield Co. Meath, David Drum, Athboy, Co. Meath and Eamonn Kirk, Co. Louth. Over the course of the next three years the Irish Independent will report on the progress of the programme across all ten participants. Drummonds are proud to support this relevant initiative and look forward to working with the participating farmers, Teagasc and other industry partners as they map out a blueprint for profitable calf to beef systems.
