At Drummonds we continually aim to maximise the inclusion of wholesome Irish-grown cereals & pulses in our quality-assured, performance feeds, manufactured at our UFAS and Bord Bia accredited feed mill at Navan. 
We firmly believe it is important to highlight to Ireland’s many national & international food customers that our dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep are fed a diet predominantly made up of lush, green grass, but that this grass is supplemented, as and when required, with feeds (ideally) largely containing Irish-grown cereals and pulses.
We have concerns that ‘holes may be picked’ in the current Bord Bia led Origin Green Programme 
which gives the perception that grass accounts for 100% of the diet of Ireland’s dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep. The Origin Green marketing message needs to be beyond reproach; needs to tell the ‘full’ story; & in fact we believe, would & should be strengthened, through highlighting the provenance of the ingredients making up the larger proportion of the concentrate element of our animals’ diet. This is something which Ireland Inc can, & we in Drummonds’ would argue should, be controlled. Of course, cognizance needs to be taken of the fact that Ireland is a nett importer of cereals and a deficit country for protein feeds – however these constraints should not stop Bord Bia/DAFM demonstrating leadership to strengthen Ireland - the Food Island’s – marketing message. Surely this equates to a huge opportunity for Ireland ?
We in Drummonds firmly believe that Bord Bia/the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine needs to urgently establish and stipulate a minimum inclusion level for Irish-grown ingredients in ALL Irish manufactured animal feeds. We in Ireland can all be proud of the quality of the grass we grow; the crops we produce; and the animals we rear and farm. Farmers, the animal feed industry, and the food and drinks processors should not fear close scrutiny/inspection – today’s consumer demands a high level of reassurance about the quality and provenance of the foods they consume. ‘We’ have nothing to hide. We can & should be proud of what it is we do – and in many cases do better than most other countries – and accordingly Irish farmers should be rewarded and share in the success of the excellent quality foods and drinks we produce in Ireland.
In Drummonds we are extremely proud that ALL the grains and pulses we purchase are from IGAS-approved cereal growers. Irish-grown cereals and pulses are fully traceable, GM-free & produced to strict EU crop husbandry standards. Surely feeding rich, nutritious grass along with quality-assured Irish-grown crops to our dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep adds to the sustainability of our ruminant farming systems. Surely this forms part of what it is Ireland Inc./ Bord Bia should be marketing ?
